Harvest Service

We shall be holding our Harvest Service this Friday, 10th October, 2008.  We should be grateful for any fruit, vegetables, tins, packets etc that you can spare.  As usual, the produce will be collected and distributed to the elderly members of the community.

PTA
The PTA will be holding their first meeting on Tuesday, October 14th at 3.30 in the School Hall.  All are welcome and support is much needed.  In addition to all the other events that they organise on behalf of the school, this year the PTA are hoping to arrange a Prom for the pupils of Year 6.  If you have a child in Year 6 please reply to the letter that is also going out today.  The PTA need to know numbers to ascertain whether this event is viable.

Many thanks for your support of the Book Fair which was held recently. Over £300 of new books can be purchased as a result of the commission gained.

19th September, 2008

Start of School Day
We are hoping that you can help us to admit the children from the yard in the mornings with the least amount of disruption.  At the moment parents are lining up with their children in the infant yard – and in some cases in the junior yard.  It is important that the class teacher can see who is present as the class are taken in so that no-one is left behind.  This is difficult when parents and pushchairs are in the line.

Would you please therefore take your child to the line when the buzzer sounds and then leave the yard.  On very wet mornings when it is not feasible for the children to line up outside, they can be admitted through the main door at Reception only and then go into the Hall until the buzzer sounds.  Parents, children and pushchairs in the corridors on wet mornings make for very slippery conditions and we have already had an accident as a result of this.

Please be assured that these arrangements are for the safety of your child. If you need to speak to a teacher please do so at the end of the day, pass a message to the class teacher via the office or make an appointment.  The Headteacher is usually available at the start of the day but can be seen at any time if an appointment is made in advance.

Newsletter 11th September, 2008

Welcome Back!
It has been good to see improved punctuality so far this term in spite of the awful weather we have had..  As you know, lateness was one of the key issues mentioned in our inspection last term and we are keen to ensure an improvement this school year.

Breakfast Club
Breakfast Club is open each morning from 8.10 a.m. to all children.  The meal is free and they can have cereal, toast and fruit juice.  Breakfast Club gives our children a great start to the day, allows them to meet their friends before school and ensures they are in school on time.  Please take advantage of this free Welsh Assembly initiative.

ICT Review
The inspectors found the teaching of Information Technology and the children’s skills in this subject to be good throughout the school, but we constantly aim to improve our teaching and the children’s learning.  For this reason we are participating in the BECTA Self Review Framework and hope to gain a Quality Mark this year.  Accompanying this letter is the I.C.T. Co-ordinator’s news sheet to update you on the facilities available to your children in school and the areas we hope to develop.

I am very aware that newsletters do not always get home and we are also keen to cut down on the amount of paper we use in school.  If you have access to the internet and would like to receive letters electronically, please e.mail your child’s name and class to admin.corneliprimary@bridgend.gov.uk and we shall add your family to a mailing list for future newsletters.

Harvest Service
Thank you all so very much for the generous donations to the Harvest Service.  The Senior Citizens were delighted both by the gifts and by the children’s singing during the service.  It all goes to prove what a strong community Cornelly is.

Book Fair
The recent Book Fair raised over £120 worth of commission in new books for the school.  Thank you for your support.

P.T.A.
We desperately need new members for the Parent Teacher Association.  The first meeting of the new school year will be held at the School on Thursday, 4th October at 3.30 p.m.  Please come along.  We can provide a video for the children in the School Hall if it makes it easier for you to attend.

Newsletter 12th September, 2007
Welcome back!
It was sad to see our Year 6 children leave at the end of last term but wonderful to greet so many new faces at the start of the new school year.

School Book Fair
We shall be holding the Autumn Book Fair in the Library for a week from Monday 17th September.  Books can be purchased at lunchtimes and at the end of the school day, from 3.30 – 4.15.  There will be a wide range of fiction and non fiction available to suit all ages.  The competition theme this time is “Fantasy” and the children will have the opportunity to win a book to the value of £5.  On Monday all children can dress up as princesses, dragons or fairy tale characters if they so wish.  There is a rumour that some of the staff will be dressing up too!

Lost Property
We have a great deal of lost property left from last term.  Please check the box in the entrance for school uniform and the bags in the Library for lost coats.  We cannot hold these clothes indefinitely.  Any unclaimed uniform will be re-cycled in a uniform sale to be held shortly.  If you have any outgrown uniform and no more children to hand it on to, please send it in for this sale.

Water
Iced water is available in the Hall but children need to remember to bring their water bottles each day.

Big Bags
Please do not send your child to school with large bags.  We provide each child with a blue draw string bag to hold their belongings.  P.E. kit can be brought on a Monday in a disposable carrier bag, left in the drawstring bag and taken home on a Friday for washing.  Unlike the drawstring bags which hang well below the peg, there is no room for large bags on the clothes pegs and trying to cram one on results in coats falling on the floor and getting lost.  Keeping belongings in their drawstring bags also reduces any risk of pilfering.

INSET Days
19th September and 5th November have been designated teacher training days and there will be no school for pupils on these days.

Newsletter 6.7.07
Sports Days
It seems as if we shall never manage to hold Sports Days this year!  However, we are trying for Monday (Infants) and Tuesday (Juniors) next week if the weather is fine and the grounds are dry.  I am sorry that you, like us, have been disappointed so many times but we cannot take children out if there is any risk of injury due to wet grass etc.  If Monday and Tuesday again prove unsuitable we shall leave it to individual classes to find a break in the weather before the end of term.  The children will have their competitions if at all possible although we shall not be able to notify parents.

Parents’ Evenings
We hope to see you all next Monday and Tuesday evenings, following receipt of the children’s reports.

Year 6 Leavers’ Evening
This will take place on Tuesday, 17th July at 6.00 p.m.  Parents of all Year 6 children are very welcome.

Lost Property
We have a great deal of lost property in school at the moment.  Please call in if your children have lost any items of clothing as this will be binned or put into a uniform sale if not claimed.

Staff leaving
We say “Goodbye and Good Luck” to Mrs. Rogers (Class 8), Mrs. Delgado and Miss Martin at the end of term.  They have all been wonderful members of staff and we shall miss them

Leavers’ evening                  Tuesday 17th July

End of term                        Friday 20th July

Finally, thank you all for the wonderful support you have shown this year – it is very much appreciated.

Basic Skills Quality Mark Award

Newsletter 8.6.07
Green Flag!
I am delighted to inform you that the school has won its Green Flag Award.  This prestigious award has been given in recognition of the work of the School Council and the Environment Club in protecting and improving the school environment, recycling and conserving energy.  We are very proud of this achievement and hope to have an official ceremony when the flag is presented.  The whole school has contributed to this initiative but my thanks go especially to Mrs. Powell, Miss Robinson, Mr. Powell and all the children!

P.T.A.
I know many of the children attended and enjoyed the Disco organised by the P.T.A. yesterday evening.  The event raised a considerable amount which will, as usual, be spent on the children.  Unfortunately, we are losing many P.T.A. members this summer, as their children move on to secondary schooling.  We urgently need more members to carry on the good work.  Speaking to some of you yesterday, it would appear that a meeting straight after school would be preferable to an evening meeting.  The teaching staff could arrange activities for the children during this time.  Please let me know if this would be a better alternative to the current evening meetings at the Green Acres.

Sports Days
Please note the following days for School Sports Days:
June 19th , 9.30 a.m Infant Sports Day   Children return to classes after event
June 20th , 930 a.m. Junior Sports Day. Children return to classes after event.
July 12th 2.00 p.m. Nursery & Playgroup Sports. Children go home after event.

Free Dinners Form
These forms are available from the school office.  If you feel you are eligible, please ensure that you apply straight away so that your children can have free school meals when we return in September.  Failure to provide  this will result in charges for any meals provided.

Thank you all once again for your continued support.

Next week we shall be encouraging all children to walk to school in an attempt to raise awareness of Health and Fitness as well as Global Warming.  This event is being supported by Bridgend County Borough Council Road Safety Team.  Children will be issued with a diary for the week in which they can record their journeys and complete activities.
If you and your children already walk to school, you are already winning points – Well Done!  For those children who normally come to school by car, we have arranged for parents to park their cars at the Community Centre Car Park from 8.30 a.m. each day and walk down, together with their children, across the park to school.
The Road Safety Team will be working closely with the school on this project and have donated prizes for all children taking part. It will be well publicised.   Bridge FM is involved and we hope to see HTV cameras on Friday.
Please join in and make this venture a success!

School Breakfast
This has proved to be very successful.  Many thanks to all the parents who have supported this venture.

Reading Books
We aim to ensure that all children in Corneli Primary become fluent readers during their time with us.  We want them to become lifelong readers, reading for information and enjoyment.  We send children home with reading scheme books and library books and hope that you will listen to your children reading for a short time each evening.  However, it is essential that these books are returned each day so that this work can be continued in school.  I realise that books can become mislaid and if this is the case please speak to your child’s teacher.  If the book is irretrievably lost, then please send in a donation of £1 to help to cover the cost of its replacement.  We lost many books last term and are anxious to recover them if possible.

Children’s clothing
Please make sure that all items of clothing are clearly labelled with your child’s name and that he/she comes home with the correct clothes.  Several parents have reported lost clothing recently.

Dogs on site
We are again noticing people bringing dogs onto the school site.  For health and safety reasons, please leave dogs at home when you deliver and collect your child and ensure that your dog does not escape during the day.  I shall be contacting the dog warden to collect any dogs straying into the grounds.
